Two reason. it can fixed the objects on the turntable. Second, it can be scanned as part of the stone and help allignment. As the stone are too too small, and light range is fixed. if without it, only scan the stone simple, it would be easy misalignment

I have tried scanning spheres and other objects that would be difficult for 3D software to identify well, and I ended up doing something similar to give the software reference points. When I would do "manual" photogrammetry I would take photographs over a piece of paper that had different shapes printed on it, then I would take different objects such as die/dice and include them in the photographs solely as reference points.
